Derby Quad announces cinema programme
QUAD announces first Cinema programme
A vibrant selection of films from all over the world has been included in the opening cinema
programme for October at QUAD.
The film programme opens on Friday 3rd October with 3 new films; a two week run of
‘How To Lose Friends And Alienate People' (15) a new comedy starring Simon Pegg, Jeff
Bridges, Gillian Anderson and Kirsten Dunst
, ‘Somers Town' (12A) the latest film from local Director Shane Meadows and
'L’Heure D’Ete' (12A) S (Summer Hours) a French drama starring Juliette Binoche. Also
screening that week are the Brazilian thriller
'Elite Squad' (18) S, the documentary
'Man On Wire' (12A) and a preview of
'Summer' (cert tbc), the new film from Derbyshire scriptwriter Hugh Ellis which stars
starring Robert Carlyle. Hugh Ellis will be introducing the screening. On Sunday 5th October
there is a one-off screening of
'Love Letters And High Wires' (U) a screening of archive avant garde films from the
General Post Office made in the 1930’s.
From Friday 10th October, an Icelandic thriller
'Jar City' (15)
S and a bittersweet comedy set in Uruguay
‘El Bano Del Papa’ (15)
S will both be screened with English subtitles and
'Savage Grace'(15) starring Julianne Moore is a dark drama based on real events and set in
the 1970’s. There is a one-off ‘Desert Island’ screening of
'The 39 Steps' (U) on Sunday 12th October.
The Coen Brothers latest comedy
'Burn After Reading' (15) starring Brad Pitt, George Clooney and John Malkovitch stars a
two week run from Friday 17th October. Also opening on the 17th October is locally shot period
costume drama
'The Duchess' (12A) which was filmed at Kedleston Hall and Chatsworth. French drama
'I've Loved You So Long' (12A)
S and a poignant comedy
'The Visitor' (15) can also be seen, and there will be an archive screening exploring
women’s lives from the 1920’s - 1950’s called
'The Housewives Choice' (U) in a one-off screening on Sunday 19th October.
Four foreign language films feature in the week commencing Friday 24th October with
'Linha Da Passe' (15) S from Brazil and by the Director of The Motorcycle Diaries,
'Paris' (15)
S; a French romantic drama and
'The Banishment' (12A)
S, a dark and powerful film from Russia. A one-off ‘Desert Island’ screening of the
Italian film, and classic homage to the big screen
'Cinema Paradiso' (PG)
S, can be seen on Sunday 26th October.
On Friday 31st October there will be a Halloween Party event including a one-off screening of
'Fear(s) of The Dark' (15)
S, an unusual and surreal French animation. Also from 31st October there is a chance to
see
'Gomorrah' (15)
S, a gritty Italian gangland drama, 'Hunger'(15) a dramatisation of the events from
1981 centering on hunger striker and political protester Bobby Sands. Other films showing this weekare 'Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day' (PG), a fast paced romantic comedy,
'Ashes Of Time Redux'(cert tbc)
S a martial arts film from arthouse director Wong Kar Wai, and a ‘Desert Island’ screening
of the 1933 classic version of
'King Kong' (U).
There is a special season of music documentaries shown as the weekly ‘Cinema Exposé’&
#160; screenings which will be held every Wednesday evening. The films are:
'Chet Baker: Lets Get Lost' (15) focusing on the legendary Jazz trumpeter,
'Shine A Light' (12A) featuring the Rolling Stones, ‘We
Dreamed America' (Certificate Exempt) which looks at the new British country scene and
'Heavy Load' (12A), a documentary about the unique punk band with members of the band with
and without learning difficulties, which will be introduced by a band member.
QUAD will be holding weekly ‘Cine Kids’ screenings on Saturdays at 3.30pm and Sundays at
1.30pm. The films which will be shown are:
'Wall-E' (U),
'Kung Fu Panda' (PG),
'The Fox And The Child' (U),
'Grease' (PG) and
'Space Chimps' (U). Another weekly feature will be the Midweek Treat screenings which will
be held every Wednesday at 2pm. Introduced by The Derby Evening Telegraphs’ Film and Entertainments
Editor Nigel Powlson, the screenings also include free tea and biscuits.
Throughout the month there will be some special screenings including a ‘Cine Babies’ screening
for parents with babies under 12 months, supportive environment screenings suitable for adults and
children with specific needs as well as free screenings for schools as part of National schools
